James Frew Ltd & West College Scotland Partnership
Ryan Kelly, 3rd Year Apprentice
James Frew Ltd recently took on 10 new recruits to their Plumbing Apprenticeship after receiving a staggering 250 applications. The apprentices will now embark on a four year bespoke Modern Apprenticeship, which incorporates the Plumbing Vocational Qualification alongside other industry qualifications important to the business. The programme will give the participants the opportunity to achieve a nationally recognised qualification through on the job training and attending classes at the newly launched ‘James Frew Academy’ at West College Scotland, Paisley Campus.
The new recruits will join the company’s existing 23 apprentices who are all at various stages of the programme.
James Frew Ltd believe its strength lies in its people and is committed to the continuous training, health and safety of its employees. Over half of their total 200+ workforce consists of fully qualified gas engineers.
The majority of their employees are often required to hold multiple certifications and therefore undertake extensive training and assessment of core specialist qualifications, which must be refreshed every five years.
This has important cost implications and can lead to difficulties in workforce planning. However, having qualified staff is paramount for James Frew Ltd and non-compliance would threaten jobs and the security of the business.
West College Scotland have launched a bespoke partnership with James Frew Ltd and the project will include the monitoring of certification renewals, development of individual training plans and the measurement of the impact of training through Achievement Measurement Indexing.
Through reduced costs and improved quality of training, the new process will provide business efficiency savings ensuring that James Frew Ltd continues to maintain a sustainable competitive advantage in a fast moving commercial market.
Roddy Frew, Managing Director said: “We are delighted to work with West College Scotland, it has helped us align training plans and enhance our service offer.”
Further to their new partnership with the college, James Frew Ltd employee Ryan Kelly won the 2018 Heating & Ventilation Fitter Apprentice of the Year at the BESA Group Scotland Annual Awards. Ryan is currently in his third year of his apprenticeship and as well as wining at the BESA Awards he was also a finalist for the Apprentice of the Year Award at the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2018.
